Taylor Deupree

Taylor Deupree is a foundational figure in the 'lowercase' and microsound movements of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Based in New York, his career began in the techno scene with Prototype 909, but he quickly pivoted toward a more experimental, minimalist aesthetic.

In 1997, he founded the 12k label, which became a global hub for glitch, ambient, and modern classical music, championing a 'less is more' philosophy that influenced a generation of electronic musicians. His sound identity is defined by a fascination with imperfection, using digital errors (glitches) and analog decay to create warmth. Over the decades, his work has evolved from the clinical minimalism of 'Comma,' to a more lush, organic sound that incorporates acoustic instruments and environmental recordings. He is a frequent collaborator with luminaries like Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto, bridging the gap between academic experimentalism and accessible, emotive ambient. Critically, he is regarded as a master of sonic space, with his work often cited as the gold standard for high-fidelity ambient production.
