Sprawling, cinematic instrumentals that drift from structured post-rock into hazy, improvisational drones. Perfect for deep focus or late-night solitude.
Tarentel creates music that feels like a memory captured on aging film. Their early work is rooted in the classic post-rock tradition of long, patient builds and soaring guitar melodies, but they quickly evolved into something far more porous and experimental. It is the sound of a band slowly dissolving their own boundaries, letting the structure melt into beautiful, murky textures and rhythmic pulses that feel like they are coming from the next room.
What makes them truly distinctive is their relationship with visual media and improvisation. By incorporating Super-8 film projections into their identity, they developed a sound that mirrors the grain, flicker, and light-leaks of analog film. Their later records abandon traditional song structures entirely in favor of 'Ghetto Beats' and psychedelic drones, creating a sense of infinite, unhurried space where the listener can get lost in the hiss and hum.
Start with 'From Bone to Satellite' if you want the epic, melodic side of post-rock. If you prefer something more abstract and atmospheric, 'Ghetto Beats on the Surface of the Sun' offers a fascinating look at their more experimental, loop-based evolution.
Tarentel is a post-rock band which formed in San Francisco in 1995. Initially, the band consisted of Danny Grody and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. The line-up altered over the years and has included John Hughes, Trevor Montgomery, Patricia Kavanaugh, Kenseth Thibideau, Jeffrey Rosenberg, Jim Redd, Tony Cross, Steve Dye and others. Tarentel began as a post-rock band, making extended, LP-side length instrumental pieces. Over the course of three full-length albums and a number of singles and EPs, Tarentel has gradually shifted its style to a looser, more improvisational form that incorporates genres such as noise and drone as well as having a strong psychedelic element. Tarentel member, Paul Clipson, projects original Super-8 film compositions that accompany each live performance by the band. He died in February 2018. The band has been inactive at least since their most recent release in 2009.
