Tanukichan

Tanukichan is the solo project of San Francisco-based multi-instrumentalist Hannah van Loon. Emerging in the mid-2010s, van Loon transitioned from a background in classical, bluegrass, and jazz to a highly personal brand of shoegaze and dream pop.

Her sound identity is defined by the contrast between 'heavy' and 'soft' - specifically the use of high-gain, distorted electric guitars paired with breathy, whispered vocal delivery. Much of her discography is produced in collaboration with Chaz Bear (Toro y Moi), whose influence introduces elements of chillwave and funk-adjacent bass work into the shoegaze framework. This partnership has resulted in a sonically cohesive output that prioritizes atmosphere and 'vibe' over traditional rock aggression. Critically, she is positioned as a key figure in the modern shoegaze revival, often cited alongside artists like Jay Som and Alvvays for her ability to blend indie-pop sensibilities with dense sonic textures. Her career arc shows a steady refinement of this 'lazy Sunday' aesthetic, moving from the lo-fi experiments of 'Radiolove' to the more structured and rhythmically diverse 'GIZMO'.
