Hazy, travel-worn indie pop that feels like a polaroid of a distant horizon. Ethereal vocals drift over organic textures and global rhythms for a quiet, wandering soul.
Taken by Trees is the solo moniker of Swedish musician Victoria Bergsman, who rose to prominence as the lead singer of the indie pop group The Concretes. After departing the band in 2006, Bergsman pivoted toward a more experimental and globally-minded approach to pop music.
Her debut, Open Field, established a minimalist folk-pop foundation, but it was 2009's East of Eden that defined her career. Recorded in Pakistan with local amateur musicians, the album was a critical success that challenged the boundaries of Western indie pop by incorporating authentic regional sounds without falling into 'world music' clichés. Her third album, Other Worlds, continued this geographical focus, drawing from Hawaiian field recordings and dub production. Bergsman is also widely recognized for her guest vocals on Peter Bjorn and John's global hit 'Young Folks.' Her work is characterized by a high degree of artistic autonomy, often moving between labels like Rough Trade and Secretly Canadian while maintaining a signature sound defined by breathy vocals, spacious arrangements, and a restless, nomadic curiosity.
