Cold, melodic Norwegian black metal that feels like a hike through a foggy mountain pass. Traditional grimness meets unexpected folk instrumentation and raw pride.
Taake sounds like the physical embodiment of a Norwegian winter. It is music that carries the biting chill of a blizzard but retains a strange, rugged warmth through its melodic sensibilities. The guitars don't just buzz; they weave intricate, almost catchy patterns that feel ancient and rooted in the soil of Bergen. It is aggressive, yes, but there is a pervasive sense of longing and cultural memory that elevates it above mere sonic violence.
What truly sets Taake apart is Hoest's willingness to break the rigid rules of the genre while remaining 'True Norwegian Black Metal' at his core. You might be mid-blastbeat when a banjo suddenly cuts through the mix, or a mandolin provides a brief, pastoral respite. These aren't gimmicks; they are part of a singular vision that treats black metal as a vessel for national identity and personal demons, delivered in a harsh native dialect that sounds like grinding stones.
Start with 'Hordalands doedskvad' to hear the peak of the classic trilogy. It perfectly balances the raw, unpolished energy of the early 90s scene with the sophisticated songwriting and unexpected instrumental flourishes that have made Taake a pillar of the modern Norwegian landscape.
Taake (Norwegian: [ˈtôːkə]) is a Norwegian black metal band from Bergen, formed in 1993 and originally named Thule. The band's one continuous member is Hoest, who writes all and records most of the music. Taake has released eight full-length albums and several EPs. The band describes itself as "True Norwegian black metal", and Hoest said he wants to "awaken national pride and cultural nostalgia" in Norwegian listeners as well as to remind people "that Hell is right here on Earth and that humans can be demons". All lyrics are in Hoest's native dialect and are printed in Norse runes. Taake is the old spelling of the Norwegian word tåke, meaning "fog".
