Syndrone

Syndrone is an alias of the prolific American producer Travis Stewart, primarily known as Machinedrum. Launched in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Syndrone project served as Stewart's vehicle for exploring the more experimental, 'glitch' oriented side of Intelligent Dance Music (IDM).

While his later work under Machinedrum would incorporate jungle, footwork, and hip-hop, Syndrone remains rooted in the aesthetic of labels like Merck and early Warp. The sound identity is defined by granular synthesis, micro-sampling, and a focus on digital 'errors' as rhythmic elements. Historically, Syndrone is part of the second wave of IDM that moved away from the lushness of the 90s toward a more brittle, software-driven sound. Critical consensus views Syndrone as a vital precursor to the modern glitch-hop and experimental bass scenes, showcasing Stewart's early mastery of complex drum programming. The project has seen sporadic revivals, notably with the 2018 release Chaos Mechanics, which updated the signature sound with modern high-fidelity production while maintaining its cerebral, fractured core.
