Syd Arthur

Intricate, pastoral psych-rock that weaves together jazz-inflected rhythms and shimmering violin. A modern evolution of the classic Canterbury sound.

Intro

Syd Arthur sounds like the intersection of a sun-drenched meadow and a sophisticated jazz club. Their music is characterized by a remarkable fluidity, where complex time signatures and polyrhythmic drumming feel as natural as a breeze. The presence of Raven Bush's violin adds a unique textural layer, often taking the lead role usually reserved for a second guitar, creating a sound that is both earthy and ethereal.

What truly sets them apart is their ability to make the avant-garde feel accessible. They draw heavily from the Canterbury scene heritage of the late 60s, yet they strip away the self-indulgence often associated with prog-rock. Instead, they focus on 'psychedelic funk' grooves and melodic hooks that shimmer with analog warmth. It is music that feels deeply rooted in the English countryside but possesses a restless, exploratory spirit.

Start with the album 'Apricity' for their most polished and infectious work, or 'Sound Mirror' if you want to hear their more intricate, jam-oriented side. Both records showcase their ability to balance technical precision with a dreamy, nostalgic atmosphere that rewards close listening while remaining perfectly suited for a lazy summer afternoon.

Syd Arthur were an English psychedelic rock band, formed in Canterbury in 2003 by brothers frontman Liam and bassist Joel Magill, drummer Fred Rother and violinist Raven Bush. Rother was replaced by the Magills' younger brother Josh in 2016.
