Sultry, swaggering rock with a dangerous edge. Gritty guitar textures and commanding vocals that feel like a late night on Hollywood Boulevard.
Sweethead sounds like the intersection of high-gloss glam and the dusty, heavy grit of the California desert. It is music that carries a distinct sense of 'after-hours' energy, where the melodies are catchy but the underlying instrumentation feels slightly predatory and sinister. The interplay between Troy Van Leeuwen's signature angular guitar work and Serrina Sims' commanding, vampish vocals creates a sound that is both sophisticated and raw.
What truly sets them apart is the pedigree of the rhythm section and the production. This isn't just standard alternative rock; it's a meticulously crafted wall of sound that utilizes analog warmth and subtle, eerie textures like low-register piano and layered percussion. It captures the specific feeling of a Hollywood dive bar: equal parts glitter and grime, with a constant, driving momentum that never feels hurried.
Start with their self-titled debut album or 'The Great Disruptors' EP. These recordings perfectly encapsulate their blend of seedy glam and hard-hitting stoner rock grooves, offering a gateway into a sound that is as much about atmosphere as it is about the riffs.
Sweethead is an American alternative rock band formed in 2008. The group's lineup consists of singer Serrina Sims and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Troy Van Leeuwen (of Queens of the Stone Age, formerly of A Perfect Circle, Enemy and Failure). For recording and touring they are joined by a variety of guest musicians, many of which are current or former members of Queens of the Stone Age or Mark Lanegan Band. Sweethead have released two studio albums—Sweethead (2009) and Descent to the Surface (2016)—and one extended play, The Great Disruptors (2009).
