Superdrag occupies a unique space in the 1990s alternative rock canon, bridging the gap between the era's grunge-adjacent grit and the classicist power pop of Big Star or The Raspberries. Formed in Knoxville, TN, in 1992, the band achieved mainstream visibility with the 1996 hit 'Sucked Out', which positioned them as a major label priority at Elektra.
However, their artistic trajectory quickly veered toward complex, high-fidelity experimentation. Their 1998 follow-up, 'Head Trip in Every Key', utilized 36-piece orchestras and Mellotrons, alienating casual radio fans but securing a permanent cult status among critics and power pop aficionados. Following a departure from Elektra, they released 'In the Valley of Dying Stars', an album that refined their 'wall of sound' guitar approach.
