Dusty, tape-saturated drones and psych-folk played on hand-built instruments. It sounds like a sepia-toned memory of a landscape you have never actually visited.
The music of Steven R. Smith feels like a physical object, something weathered by wind and sand. It is deeply rooted in the earth, utilizing a range of traditional and self-constructed instruments like spike fiddles and hurdy-gurdies to create a sound that is simultaneously ancient and experimental. There is a grainy, tactile quality to his recordings, often characterized by the hiss of tape and the natural resonance of wooden chambers.
What makes Smith truly distinctive is his ability to bridge the gap between American primitive guitar and the haunting folk traditions of Eastern Europe. Under his various monikers, he explores the intersection of psychedelic rock and mournful drone, creating dense layers of sound that never feel mechanical. His work is heavily influenced by his parallel life as a printmaker, possessing a stark, woodcut-like clarity even in its most abstract moments.
For those new to his massive catalog, 'Autumn Is the End' or 'In The Spires' are perfect entry points. They showcase his ability to build immense emotional weight through repetitive, circular melodies and a unique sense of 'rural' psychedelia that avoids all the usual clichés of the genre.
