Thick, down-stroked guitar walls and a gritty London snarl. This is the bridge where 1977 punk meets the high-octane swagger of 80s hard rock.
Steve Jones sounds like the engine of a classic muscle car that’s seen a few too many street fights. While his work with the Sex Pistols defined a generation of chaos, his solo output and later collaborations lean into a muscular, high-gloss hard rock that never loses its street-level grit. The guitars are the main event: massive, multi-tracked, and relentlessly driving, providing a sonic weight that feels both dangerous and incredibly satisfying.
What makes Jones distinctive is his ability to take the raw, unschooled energy of early punk and apply it to the grander architecture of arena rock. He doesn't play with the technical flash of his 80s contemporaries; instead, he relies on a legendary 'wall of sound' technique. By layering multiple tracks of his signature Les Paul tone, he creates a dense, impenetrable texture that feels much larger than a standard four-piece band.
Start with 'Fire and Gasoline' if you want to hear the perfect intersection of punk attitude and Sunset Strip production. It’s the sound of a man who survived the explosion of 1977 and decided to see how loud he could make the 1980s. It’s essential listening for anyone who thinks rock and roll should be thick, loud, and just a little bit sleazy.
