Steve Harris

Driving, percussive bass lines and twin-guitar harmonies that define the epic scale of traditional heavy metal. High-energy anthems for the bold and the restless.

Intro

This is the sound of pure, unadulterated momentum. It is anchored by a distinctive, clattering bass technique that feels more like a percussion instrument than a traditional rhythm section. The music carries a sense of grand scale, often leaning into historical narratives and complex, multi-part structures that betray a deep love for 1970s progressive rock. It is bright, metallic, and relentlessly forward-moving.

What sets this apart is the 'gallop' - a rhythmic signature that mimics the hoofbeats of a cavalry charge. Despite the heavy metal label, there is a melodic warmth here derived from twin-guitar harmonies and a refusal to rely on simple distortion. The production often emphasizes the physical act of playing, from the audible click of strings hitting frets to the organic thud of the drums.

Start with the British Lion project to hear a more hard-rock-oriented side of this legendary songwriter. It captures the same melodic sensibilities and driving energy of his main work but in a more compact, punchy format that highlights his role as a primary composer and bandleader.

Stephen Percy Harris (born 12 March 1956) is an English musician and songwriter, best known as the bassist for heavy metal band Iron Maiden, which he founded in 1975. He is the only member who has been in the band for its entire history, while he and guitarist Dave Murray are the only members who have appeared on all of the band's studio albums. Harris developed an influential style of bass playing, particularly the "gallop" which can be found on many Iron Maiden recordings, such as the singles "Run to the Hills" and "The Trooper". He was the band's primary songwriter in its early history, but in later years he has been more likely to collaborate with his other members of the band. Harris has also assumed other roles in Iron Maiden, contributing keyboards and backing vocals, co-producing albums, and directing live videos. Harris is widely regarded as one of the best heavy metal bassists of all time. He has also led the hard rock side project British Lion.
