Gritty, soulful Belgian hip-hop driven by live bass and sharp multi-MC chemistry. Authentic boom bap with a distinct Walloon edge for late-night city roaming.
Starflam sounds like the golden age of hip-hop filtered through the industrial grit of Liège. Their sound is anchored by a heavy, organic low-end, often utilizing a live bass player to give their tracks a physical, swinging momentum that programmed beats alone can't replicate. It is music that feels lived-in, dusty, and deeply rooted in the urban environment, balancing aggressive lyrical delivery with lush, soulful samples.
What truly sets them apart is the collective energy of five distinct MCs. Rather than just taking turns, the group excels at vocal interplay, finishing each other's sentences and layering harmonies that give the music a dense, communal feel. Their production often leans into cinematic territory, using jazz and soul loops that evoke a sense of nostalgia while the lyrics tackle contemporary social realities and identity.
For those new to the group, the album Survivant is the essential entry point. It captures the band at their commercial and creative peak, showcasing their ability to craft catchy hooks without sacrificing their underground credibility. It is the perfect soundtrack for anyone who appreciates the craft of the DJ and the power of a well-coordinated rap collective.
Starflam is a Belgian hip hop group from Liège in the French-speaking southern part of Belgium - Wallonia. The group started out in the early 1990s under the name H-Posse with members DJ Mig One, Fred'alabas, Seg and Balo (AKA Baloji). A few years later, after Brussels-born Akro and Mista R. joined the group, the name was changed to Malfrats Linguistiques (linguistic gangsters). Mista R. later left the group when he emigrated to France, and was replaced by Kaer and Pavé, two rappers from Liège. The group changed names again, now to Starflam (the reverse anagram of Malfrats). They now consist of 5 rappers, a bass player and a DJ. In 2005, Balo left the group to start a solo career. 10 years after their last album together, the group made a comeback in 2015 with 2 new single : "Plus que jamais" (January 2015) and "A l'ancienne" (April 2015).
