Cold, mechanical black metal fused with disorienting industrial noise. A claustrophobic and cinematic experience for fans of avant-garde extremity.
Spektr sounds like the inside of a malfunctioning machine that has somehow developed a soul, and that soul is deeply troubled. It is a suffocating blend of traditional black metal tremolo picking and harsh, industrial soundscapes. The guitars often feel secondary to the overwhelming sense of dread created by glitchy electronics and eerie, non-musical samples that suggest a world of urban decay and psychological collapse.
What truly sets them apart is their anonymity and their refusal to follow standard song structures. Instead of verses and choruses, they build movements of tension. You might hear a blast beat suddenly dissolve into a five-minute stretch of dark ambient hum, or a piercing scream buried under layers of digital distortion. It is music that feels like a transmission from a void, specifically designed to make the listener feel unmoored and slightly unsafe.
Start with 'Cypher' if you want to hear their most polished and terrifying vision. It perfectly captures the transition from raw metal to high-concept industrial horror. It is not an easy listen, but for those who find beauty in the abrasive and the uncanny, it is a masterwork of modern experimental metal.
Spektr is an experimental black metal duo formed in 2000, in Paris, France. They are currently signed to Candlelight Records and have released four full-length albums to date. The band's sound is a mix of raw black metal in style of Darkthrone with elements of industrial and dark ambient, which has drawn comparisons to the more recent works of fellow countrymen Blut Aus Nord. Their work has drawn very wide attention and acclaim, with their first album being dubbed 'the weirdest black metal album ever' by Aquarius Records in San Francisco, and their second being acclaimed as "absolutely essential, unique and memorable" and "an album with a solid artistic value". Very little is known about the members of this group, other than that they are also involved with the black metal groups Battlehorns and Haemoth. The band released its fourth full-length album, entitled The Art to Disappear, on 29 January 2016 via Agonia Records.
