Son of Sam

Aggressive horror punk with a gothic metal edge. Dark, driving anthems that bridge the gap between 80s deathrock and modern hardcore energy.

Intro

Son of Sam sounds like a midnight ritual performed in a high-end recording studio. It carries the DNA of legendary horror punk acts but injects it with a muscular, metallic production that feels far more substantial than standard garage punk. The guitars are thick and saturated, while the rhythm section provides a relentless, driving pulse that feels both urgent and calculated.

What makes them distinctive is the 'supergroup' chemistry. You can hear the intersection of AFI's melodic drama and Danzig's bluesy, occult-tinged metal. The vocals often lean into a dramatic, almost operatic croon before exploding into punk aggression, creating a tension that feels theatrical yet dangerous. It is the sound of the 'spooky' side of punk growing up and getting heavier.

Start with 'Songs from the Earth' to hear the definitive lineup. It captures a specific moment in the early 2000s when the California punk scene was looking back at its gothic roots while embracing a larger, more cinematic sound. It's essential listening for anyone who finds the Misfits too lo-fi and Danzig too slow.

Son of Sam was an American horror punk band that is a side project created by Todd Youth in 2000, during his tenure as the guitarist for Danzig. The band's initial line up featured members of Samhain, Danzig, and AFI. Much like its members' other work, Son of Sam plays in the horror punk style, and also infuses metal and deathrock elements into their music. The name of the band was inspired by the serial killer David Berkowitz, known by the pseudonym "Son of Sam". This also draws reference to the band Samhain.
