Sole and the Skyrider Band

Dense, politically charged rap colliding with cinematic post-rock instrumentation. It is intellectual, urgent music for late nights and deep focus.

Intro

Sole and the Skyrider Band sounds like a collision between a radical street manifesto and a cinematic orchestral score. The music is defined by its density; you have Sole's rapid-fire, nasal delivery cutting through thick layers of live drums, swirling guitars, and moody synthesizers. It is hip-hop that refuses to stay in a box, often leaning into the expansive, crescendo-heavy structures of post-rock while maintaining a gritty, urban edge.

What makes them truly distinctive is the chemistry between Sole's anarchist-leaning, stream-of-consciousness lyricism and the Skyrider Band's sophisticated musicality. Unlike many of their Anticon peers who relied on glitchy electronics, this group prioritizes a more organic, full-band sound. You'll hear cellos and distorted guitars alongside boom-bap rhythms, creating a texture that feels both ancient and futuristic.

Start with 'Hello Cruel World' to hear their most refined balance of pop-sensibility and experimental aggression. It's the perfect entry point for anyone who wants their hip-hop to have the emotional weight of a film score and the intellectual bite of a political essay.

Sole and the Skyrider Band is an alternative hip hop quartet based in Denver, Colorado. The band consists of rapper Tim Holland a.k.a. Sole, producer Bud Berning a.k.a. Skyrider, multi-instrumentalist William Ryan Fritch, and drummer John Wagner. The band has released three albums on Anticon, Fake Four Inc and Equinox Records.
