Snailhouse

Gentle, literate indie folk that feels like a long conversation in a quiet room. Warm acoustic textures and unhurried melodies for slow mornings and deep reflection.

Intro

Snailhouse sounds like the quietest corner of a Canadian winter. It is music built on the foundation of Mike Feuerstack's gentle, breathy delivery and a mastery of the acoustic guitar that feels both effortless and deeply intentional. There is a pervasive sense of space in the arrangements, where lap steel swells and subtle percussion act as punctuation for lyrics that are as literate as they are conversational. It is the sonic equivalent of a well-worn sweater, offering a specific kind of analog warmth that feels increasingly rare.

What distinguishes Snailhouse from the broader indie-folk pack is Feuerstack's background in art-rock and experimental music. While the songs are accessible, they possess a rhythmic and harmonic sophistication that betrays his time in bands like Wooden Stars. The melodies often take unexpected turns, avoiding the clichés of the genre while maintaining a sense of profound intimacy. It is slowcore with a heart, folk with a brain, and indie rock with its volume turned down to a whisper.

For those new to the project, Lies on the Prize is the definitive entry point. Produced by Jeremy Gara of Arcade Fire, it captures the project at its most panoramic and polished without losing the core vulnerability that defines the Snailhouse sound. It is an album that rewards close listening, revealing layers of lyrical wit and instrumental nuance that only become apparent after the third or fourth spin.

Michael Feuerstack is a Canadian indie rock musician, who has been associated with the bands Wooden Stars and Snailhouse. Snailhouse was essentially a solo project with multiple contributing artists, including Julie Doiron of Eric's Trip, with production work by Jeremy Gara of The Arcade Fire. Records from Snailhouse have been released on White Whale Records, Forward Music in Canada, Lunamoth, Rhythm of Sickness, Grand Theft Autumn, Unfamiliar Records and Scratch Recordings labels. In 2012, Feuerstack announced that he was retiring the Snailhouse name, and would be releasing future music under his own name. His first album as Michael Feuerstack, Tambourine Death Bed, was officially released on May 7, 2013. He followed up in 2014 with Singer Songer, an album which featured his songs being performed by other vocalists, including John K. Samson, Angela Desveaux, Jim Bryson, Bry Webb, Little Scream and Devon Sproule. He released the album The Forgettable Truth in 2015, and followed up with Natural Weather in 2018.
