Slough Feg

Twin-guitar harmonies and eccentric storytelling that bridge the gap between Celtic folklore and 70s sci-fi. High-energy metal for the imaginative and the unrefined.

Intro

Slough Feg sounds like a lost transmission from a 1970s fantasy comic book brought to life through the grit of the San Francisco underground. Their sound is defined by a relentless, galloping rhythm section and intricate twin-guitar harmonies that owe as much to Thin Lizzy as they do to Iron Maiden. It is music that feels tactile and weathered, avoiding the polished sheen of modern metal in favor of a warm, analog punch that emphasizes the human element of the performance.

What truly sets them apart is the idiosyncratic vision of frontman Mike Scalzi. His vocal delivery is distinctively nasal and theatrical, eschewing typical metal tropes for something more akin to a bard narrating a space opera. Whether they are singing about Celtic myths or the technical specifications of a tabletop RPG, the band maintains a fierce, blue-collar energy that makes even their most high-concept material feel grounded and urgent.

For those looking to dive in, 'Traveller' is the essential starting point. It is a masterclass in conceptual songwriting that never sacrifices its heavy metal soul for its narrative ambitions. From there, explore 'Atavism' to hear the band at their most lean and aggressive, or 'Down Among the Deadmen' for a deeper look at their folk-influenced roots.

Slough Feg (also known as The Lord Weird Slough Feg) is an American heavy metal band from Pennsylvania, formed in 1990 and currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Taking their name from the Celtic folklore-influenced comic book Sláine, the band released their self-titled debut album in 1996. Slough Feg combines influences from traditional heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Brocas Helm, and Thin Lizzy, as well as English folk metal band Skyclad. Slough Feg's 2003 album Traveller was a concept album based on the role-playing game of the same name. With the release of Atavism in 2005, the band officially shortened its name to Slough Feg. Guitarist Mike Scalzi maintains that the band always referred to itself this way internally, and the addition of "The Lord Weird" made it too difficult to find Slough Feg albums in stores (which alphabetized the CDs in inconsistent ways). Slough Feg most recently released Traveller Supplement 1: The Ephemeral Glades in 2025.
