Dusty, wide-open Americana with a post-hardcore heart. Weeping pedal steel meets road-worn vocals for long drives across the West Texas desert.
Sleepercar sounds like the exact moment an adrenaline-fueled rock career pulls over at a rest stop to watch the sunset. It is music built on the bones of Americana, but it carries a certain rhythmic tension and vocal earnestness that betrays its roots in the El Paso post-hardcore scene. The guitars are warm and acoustic, but they are frequently pierced by the mournful, singing quality of a pedal steel that feels more like a ghost than an instrument.
What makes them distinctive is the way Jim Ward translates his signature intensity into a slower, more spacious vocabulary. Instead of the jagged edges of his work in Sparta or At the Drive-In, you get a sprawling, cinematic sense of place. It is deeply rooted in the geography of the American Southwest, capturing the loneliness and the beauty of empty highways and small-town bars without ever feeling like a caricature of country music.
Start with the album West Texas. It is the definitive statement of the project, perfectly balancing the grit of indie rock with the soul of alt-country. It is the ideal companion for anyone who finds beauty in the melancholy of travel and the quiet reflections that only come when you are miles away from home.
Sleepercar is the alternative country project of Jim Ward, a member of Sparta and former member of At the Drive-In. Regarding the band, Ward has noted that: "I think it will always be 'my' band. People can come and go as they please: I don’t want the stress of trying to maintain five or six happinesses, I love playing with the guys and when they want to move on, I will support them in whatever ways I can."
