Sleeper

Sleeper was a pivotal act in the second wave of the Britpop movement, emerging in 1993 and achieving significant commercial success with three Top 10 albums. Led by frontwoman Louise Wener, who became a prominent media figure and 'Cool Britannia' icon, the band specialized in melodic, guitar-driven alternative rock.

Their sound was heavily influenced by the New Wave of Blondie and the jangle-pop of The Smiths, refined through the production lens of Stephen Street. The band's cultural footprint is notable for the 'Sleeperbloke' phenomenon, a term coined to describe the contrast between a charismatic lead singer and anonymous backing musicians. Despite Wener's self-deprecating claim that they followed the coattails of Blur and Oasis, Sleeper carved out a distinct niche through their observational, often satirical lyrics focusing on suburban life and female identity. Their contribution to the 'Trainspotting' soundtrack with a cover of 'Atomic' solidified their status as era-defining artists.
