Dense, improvisational noise rock that feels like a physical weight. Sludgy riffs and feedback loops for those who find peace in total sonic saturation.
Skullflower sounds like the internal hum of a power substation amplified through a stack of blown-out Marshall amps. It is a thick, viscous sludge of sound that occupies the space between heavy metal and pure industrial noise. The guitars don't just play notes; they emit a constant, vibrating radiation of feedback and fuzz that feels like it's being carved directly into the air.
What makes them truly distinctive is their commitment to the 'wall.' While other noise bands focus on jagged shocks, Skullflower builds a monolithic, psychedelic drone that is surprisingly hypnotic. They take the DNA of early Black Sabbath and stretch it until the riffs become tectonic plates, grinding against one another in a slow-motion collision of rhythm and static. It is music that demands to be felt as much as heard.
Start with 'IIIrd Gatekeeper' to hear their most iconic balance of crushing rock rhythms and avant-garde noise. If you want to experience their more experimental, free-form evolution, 'Exquisite Fucking Boredom' offers a masterclass in how to make a beautiful mess out of pure distortion.
Skullflower is a British noise rock band, formed in 1987 in London, England. Led by guitarist Matthew Bower, the band attained a cult following using a sound based on "sludgy, Black Sabbath-style riffs overlaid with feedback, fuzzed-out guitar noise, and throttling rhythms, all played at a high volume." Always an improvisational outfit, the band's music grew increasingly free-form over the course of their career, moving further away from the rock music form. The band's lineup has been fluid; the early core members were Bower, drummer and vocalist Stuart Dennison and bassist and guitarist Stefan Jaworzyn. Other contributors included guitarist Gary Mundy of Ramleh, bassist Alex Binnie, bassist and drummer Stephen Thrower of Coil, and auxiliary bassist, guitarist, and drummer Anthony DiFranco.
