Skindred is a seminal force in the 'ragga-metal' subgenre, formed in Newport, Wales, in 1998 following the dissolution of Dub War. Led by the charismatic Benji Webbe, the band successfully bridged the gap between the UK's sound system culture and the global nu-metal explosion of the early 2000s.
Their sound identity is built on a foundation of heavy, down-tuned guitar riffs syncopated with reggae 'one-drop' drumming and dancehall vocal phrasing. This unique hybridity allowed them to tour alongside both traditional metal acts like Korn and alternative groups like Gogol Bordello.
