Single Cell Orchestra

Single Cell Orchestra is the primary project of Miguel Angelo Fierro, a pivotal figure in the San Francisco electronic music scene of the 1990s. Emerging from the Zoe Magick label circle, Fierro's work acted as a crucial bridge between the high-tempo energy of early house/techno and the emerging 'trip-hop' and 'downtempo' movements.

His 1995 debut 'Dead Vent 7' and the subsequent self-titled 1996 album on Astralwerks solidified his reputation for 'ambient techno' that was more complex and rhythmically dense than his contemporaries. Fierro's sound identity is defined by a 'thick' production style, utilizing heavy percussion slabs, dub-influenced bass, and soaring, airy synth pads. Critically, he is recognized for his ability to infuse electronic music with a jazz-like improvisational feel and a deep sense of urban atmosphere. His collaboration with Freaky Chakra further cemented his place in the West Coast experimental canon. While his output slowed in the 2000s, his early work remains a touchstone for the 'San Francisco Sound,' influencing the trajectory of atmospheric downtempo and IDM.
