Shearwater began as a quiet side project for Okkervil River members Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff, but evolved into a singular vehicle for Meiburg's fascination with the natural world and complex art-rock structures. Meiburg, a trained ornithologist, has infused the band's identity with a 'naturalist rock' aesthetic, moving through a loose trilogy of albums (Palo Santo, Rook, The Golden Archipelago) that explored island biogeography, extinction, and the human impact on remote ecosystems.
Critically, the band is lauded for its uncompromising sonic fidelity and Meiburg's vocal prowess, which is often compared to Scott Walker or Bryan Ferry. Their evolution saw a shift from acoustic-leaning chamber folk toward a more aggressive, synth-driven sound in the 2010s, influenced by Bowie's Berlin era. They occupy a unique space in the Austin indie scene, favoring grand, cinematic themes over traditional singer-songwriter tropes. Their influence web connects the literary indie of the early 2000s with the more experimental, texture-focused art rock of the present day.
