Shabaka Hutchings

Breath-focused spiritual jazz that trades frantic energy for deep, meditative stillness. Hypnotic woodwinds and organic textures for moments of profound clarity.

Intro

A central figure in the modern British jazz expansion, multi-instrumentalist Shabaka Hutchings has spent two decades reshaping the scene through a series of distinct, driving ensembles.

Born in London in 1984 and raised between the UK and Barbados, he established his voice as a saxophonist leading the rhythm-heavy quartet Sons of Kemet and the cosmic trio The Comet Is Coming. Following the dissolution of those projects, Hutchings retired his saxophone to focus on indigenous flutes and woodwinds, pivoting toward a quieter, more meditative acoustic practice under his mononym, Shabaka.

Shabaka Hutchings (born 1984), also known simply as Shabaka, is a British jazz musician, composer and bandleader. He leads the band Shabaka and the Ancestors, and formerly led Sons of Kemet before its dissolution in 2022. He was also a member of The Comet Is Coming, performing under the stage name King Shabaka. Hutchings has played saxophone and other wind instruments with the Sun Ra Arkestra, Andre 3000, Floating Points, Mulatu Astatke, Polar Bear, Melt Yourself Down, Heliocentrics, London Brew and Zed-U.

A breathtaking breath of ancient flutes

Putting down the heavy, brassy weight of the saxophone opens up a quiet, wood-scented clearing. Instead of the frantic, sweat-slicked energy of his previous bands, these tracks breathe through Japanese shakuhachi and wooden flutes, recorded live in a legendary, high-ceilinged room. You can hear the physical click of keys and the soft hiss of indrawn breath before each note. It is a radical turn toward silence, where harp strings and gentle clarinet lines drift like smoke in a still room. This is not a bid for energy, but a slow, deliberate exhalation that completely redefines his musical footprint.

It sounds like stepping inside a quiet forest temple made entirely of flutes and harps.
