Lush four-part harmonies meet rhythmic Kenyan guitar work. Warm, sophisticated Afropop that feels like a sunset celebration with your closest friends.
Sauti Sol sounds like the intersection of deep-rooted tradition and sleek modern luxury. Their music is anchored by the 'Fancy Fingers' guitar style of Polycarp Otieno, which translates classic Kenyan Benga and Rhumba rhythms into a crisp, contemporary pop context. Over this rhythmic foundation, four distinct male voices weave together in a way that feels both effortless and architecturally perfect, moving from soulful solo turns to massive, stadium-ready choruses.
What truly sets them apart is their evolution from a stripped-back acoustic group to a global pop powerhouse without losing their organic warmth. They possess a rare ability to make complex vocal arrangements feel like catchy earworms. Whether they are leaning into a slow-burn R&B ballad or a high-energy dance track, there is a consistent sense of 'Sol' (sun) in their sound; it is inherently bright, optimistic, and deeply rhythmic.
Start with 'Midnight Train' to hear their most refined, mature production, or dive into 'Live and Die in Afrika' for the high-energy anthems that defined a decade of East African pop. If you want something more intimate, their early work on 'Mwanzo' showcases the raw vocal power that first made them stars.
Sauti Sol is a Kenyan afropop band formed in Nairobi in 2005 by vocalists Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano, and Savara Mudigi. Initially an a cappella group, they later added guitarist Polycarp Otieno before adopting the name Sauti Sol. Sauti Sol released their debut studio album Mwanzo on 1 November 2008, to critical acclaim. Their second studio album, Sol Filosofia, was released on 25 February 2011, earning the group a number of accolades and nominations in the process. On 18 June 2012, the band released a self-titled extended play in collaboration with South African rapper and record producer Spoek Mathambo. Their third studio album, Live and Die in Afrika, was released online on 21 November 2015 as a free download, available for 48 hours as an early Christmas present. The band has had several successful tours in Africa and Europe, topped Kenyan charts and gained international attention with shows in Europe and the US, as well as television appearances and various accolades and nominations, including their 2011 concert performance in Kenya with South African a cappella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
