Raw, rhythm-heavy soul that feels like a secret transmission. Warm analog bass meets choral harmonies for moments of deep reflection and quiet defiance.
Listening to SAULT feels like stumbling upon a private, high-fidelity recording of a revolution happening in a basement. The sound is anchored by a thick, melodic bass presence and drums that sound like they were recorded in a small, wood-paneled room. It is music that manages to be both incredibly intimate and grandly cinematic, shifting from stripped-back funk to sweeping orchestral arrangements without losing its core identity. What makes them truly distinctive is the 'collective' sound: rather than a single star, you hear the power of voices in unison. The production by Inflo favors a vintage, tape-saturated warmth that avoids modern digital sheen, making the music feel timeless. There is a specific tension between the gentle, breathy lead vocals and the urgent, rhythmic chants that address Black identity and spirituality with unflinching honesty. Start with 'UNTITLED (Black Is)' for a powerful introduction to their social mission and rhythmic depth. If you prefer something more groove-oriented and upbeat, 'UNTITLED (Rise)' offers a masterclass in modern disco and funk. For those seeking a more spiritual or experimental experience, '11' showcases their ability to blend gospel influences with alternative rock textures.
