Saturnus

Saturnus is a cornerstone of the European death-doom scene, originating from Denmark in the early 1990s. While they began with a more traditional death metal focus under the name Assesino, a pivotal 1996 performance with My Dying Bride steered them toward the melodic, melancholic sound they are now synonymous with.

Their sonic identity is defined by a 'trinity' of vocal styles - growls, cleans, and recitations - and a heavy reliance on atmospheric keyboards and melodic lead guitar work. They occupy a unique space between the gothic romanticism of Draconian and the crushing weight of My Dying Bride. Historically, they are significant for maintaining the 'Peaceville Three' aesthetic while adding a distinctly Scandinavian sense of melodicism. Critical consensus highlights their ability to maintain emotional intensity over long song structures, often exceeding ten minutes.
