Polished German pop with a velvet baritone and a romantic heart. Sophisticated schlager for late-night dancing and nostalgic singalongs.
Roland Kaiser represents the sophisticated, 'gentleman' peak of German Schlager. His music is characterized by a rich, warm baritone that glides over high-gloss production, often blending traditional pop sensibilities with subtle disco rhythms and lush orchestral flourishes. It is music that feels expensive and lived-in, capturing the essence of adult romance with a level of poise rarely found in the genre.
What sets Kaiser apart is his lyrical focus on mature, often slightly provocative themes of desire and longing, delivered with a wink and a smile. While his contemporaries might lean into folk-adjacent kitsch, Kaiser has always maintained a sleek, urban aesthetic that feels more at home in a high-end lounge or a massive stadium than a village tent. His ability to maintain a 'cool' factor within a polarizing genre is his greatest trick.
Start with 'Santa Maria' for the ultimate 80s pop anthem, then move to 'Dich zu lieben' to hear his signature romantic storytelling. For a modern perspective on his enduring appeal, his live recordings from the 'Kaisermania' concerts in Dresden showcase the electric connection he maintains with multi-generational audiences.
Roland Kaiser (born Ronald Keiler; 10 May 1952) is a German Schlager singer. He is one of the most successful German-speaking Schlager singers. Kaiser was born in West Berlin. He was working as a marketing executive in a car firm where he was discovered by German music producers Gerd Kämpfe and Thomas Meisel, after Kaiser picked up singing cover songs at small pubs and private parties as a hobby. In 1974, he released his first single under the stage name of Roland Kaiser, titled "Was ist wohl aus ihr geworden?", and in 1976 he got his first chart placement with "Frei, das heißt allein", which reached under Top 20 on the West German top list. In 1980, he competed in the West German trial for the Eurovision Song Contest but did not win. In the same year, he had his greatest success on the lists so far with the song "Santa Maria" (by Oliver Onions/Guido & Maurizio De Angelis), which maintained its first place in West Germany for six weeks. After years in Berlin-Charlottenburg Kaiser lives in Münster-Aaseestadt.
