Intro

Roger Pontare creates music that feels like a force of nature. It is grand, theatrical, and unapologetically epic, often bridging the gap between traditional Nordic folk elements and the high-production sheen of European pop. His voice is a massive, resonant baritone that commands attention, capable of cutting through dense orchestral arrangements and driving percussion. It sounds like the wilderness of northern Sweden translated into a stadium anthem.

What truly sets Pontare apart is his ability to infuse the often-lighthearted world of Schlager with a sense of ancient mystery and spiritual weight. Drawing on his Sami heritage, he incorporates themes of nature, spirits, and the elements, giving his songs a grounded, earthy quality that contrasts with their soaring, melodic hooks. The production is typically maximalist, featuring heavy drums, sweeping strings, and dramatic builds that lead to explosive, cathartic choruses.

For those new to his sound, the best entry point is his 2000 Eurovision entry, 'When Spirits Are Calling My Name' (or the Swedish version 'När vindarna viskar mitt namn'). It perfectly encapsulates his signature blend of indigenous pride, cinematic rock, and pop sensibility. It is the kind of music that demands a large space and a listener ready for high-stakes emotional delivery.

Fred Roger Pontare (born Roger Johansson; 17 October 1951) is a Swedish musician. He lives in Bjuråker in Hudiksvalls kommun. Pontare was born in Arjeplog Municipality, and is of Sami descent.
