Rodrigo y Gabriela are a Mexican instrumental duo who redefined the possibilities of the acoustic guitar by blending heavy metal sensibilities with Latin rhythms. Formed by Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero after their departure from the thrash metal band Tierra Ácida, the duo relocated to Ireland in 1999.

This displacement was critical to their development, as they honed their sound busking on Dublin's Grafton Street, eventually gaining a massive following through word-of-mouth and high-energy live performances. Their sound is defined by a division of labor: Rodrigo handles the lead melodic lines with pick-based precision, while Gabriela provides the rhythmic foundation using a unique combination of flamenco-inspired strumming and percussive strikes on the guitar's soundboard. Despite frequent comparisons to Nuevo Flamenco, the duo explicitly cites rock and metal as their primary influences, a fact evidenced by their popular covers of Metallica and Led Zeppelin. Their career reached a critical peak with the 2019 album 'Mettavolution', which won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, signaling their evolution into more complex, spiritually-themed arrangements while maintaining their signature percussive intensity.
