Rockapella

High-energy vocal pop where every drum beat and bass line is human. Snappy, rhythmic, and undeniably fun music that turns the human voice into a full rock band.

Intro

Imagine a full rock band where every single instrument was replaced by a human voice. Rockapella creates a rich, textured sound that feels impossible given the lack of physical instruments. It is bright, rhythmic, and deeply rooted in the joy of performance, blending the precision of barbershop with the swagger of 90s R&B and pop. The music is inherently communal, radiating a warmth that only human voices in perfect sync can achieve.

What truly sets them apart is their pioneering use of vocal percussion. Unlike traditional choral groups, they treat the mouth as a drum kit, providing a backbeat that is crisp, punchy, and remarkably realistic. This rhythmic foundation allows their lead vocalists to soar with a soulful, often bluesy edge that avoids the 'stiffness' sometimes associated with vocal ensembles. They are masters of the 'vocal cover' but their original compositions carry the same infectious energy.

For the uninitiated, their holiday material is a perfect entry point, showcasing their ability to reinvent classics with complex, modern harmonies. From there, dive into their 90s-era Japanese releases or their television themes to hear the group at their most iconic and playful. It is music that demands you tap your foot and marvel at the versatility of the human anatomy.

Rockapella is an American a cappella musical group formed in 1986 in New York City. The group's name is a portmanteau of "rock" and "a cappella". Rockapella sings original vocal music and a cappella versions of other songs. Over time, their sound has evolved from high-energy pop and world music style toward a sound more influenced by R&B. Rockapella found their enduring success in Japan early in their career. They are most successful for their role as a house band and comedy troupe on the PBS children's geography game show Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?. In addition to three compilation albums in Japan, Rockapella has released 19 albums in the US and Japan. Since the band's vocal percussionist was hired, the line "All sounds provided by the voices and appendages of Rockapella" has been printed on each of their CDs.
