Robert Pollard

Gritty, bite-sized power pop anthems recorded on four-track tape. Surrealist stadium rock for people who prefer the basement to the arena.

Intro

Robert Pollard sounds like a man who found the secret blueprints to every great British Invasion hit and decided to rebuild them using only the tools found in an Ohio garage. His music is a whirlwind of massive, fist-pumping hooks that often vanish just as they reach their peak, leaving you reaching for the repeat button. It is high-stakes melodicism delivered with a low-budget aesthetic, where the hiss of the tape is as much an instrument as the overdriven guitars.

What truly sets Pollard apart is his relentless, collage-like approach to songwriting. He treats albums like scrapbooks, stitching together brilliant fragments, surrealist wordplay, and sudden bursts of noise into a cohesive, if dizzying, whole. There is a sense of joyful urgency in his work, a feeling that every musical idea, no matter how brief, deserves to be captured and shared immediately.

For the uninitiated, his solo work serves as a deeper, often more experimental extension of his legendary band Guided by Voices. Start with 'From a Compound Eye' to hear his melodic sensibilities at their most expansive and polished, then dive into the more fragmented, lo-fi gems to experience the true breadth of his prolific imagination.

Robert Ellsworth Pollard Jr. (born October 31, 1957) is an American singer and songwriter. He is the frontman and leader of indie rock band Guided by Voices, of which he is also the only constant member. He has also released 22 solo albums. He has nearly 3,000 songs registered to his name with BMI. In 2006, Paste magazine listed him as the 78th-greatest living songwriter. In 2007, he was nominated for the Shortlist Music Prize.
