Intro

Robert Hood's music is the sound of a machine trying to find its way to church. It is built on the principle of 'less is more,' using a handful of elements - a sharp 909 kick, a persistent hi-hat, and a single, repeating synth stab - to create a state of total immersion. While other techno can feel cold or clinical, Hood's work has a distinct 'swing' and warmth that suggests a human pulse behind the circuitry.

What sets him apart is his commitment to the loop. He doesn't rely on flashy transitions or melodic build-ups; instead, he uses subtle variations in texture and filter sweeps to evolve a track over ten minutes. It is hypnotic in the truest sense, designed to bypass the analytical brain and speak directly to the body's nervous system. It is the definitive 'minimal' sound, where every sound has a job to do and nothing is wasted.

Start with 'Internal Empire' to understand the blueprint of minimal techno. It is an album that feels both futuristic and ancient, capturing the industrial grit of Detroit while reaching for something spiritual. If you want something with more of a gospel-house influence, his work as Floorplan provides a more celebratory, vocal-driven entry point into his rhythmic philosophy.

Robert Hood (born 1965) is an American electronic music producer and DJ. He is a founding member of the group Underground Resistance as a 'Minister of Information' with Mad Mike Banks and Jeff Mills. He is often considered to be one of the founders of minimal techno. In 1994, Hood founded the minimal techno label M-Plant in Detroit.
