Intro

Rhythm Heritage is the sound of the 1970s at its most professional and propulsive. This is music made by the world's finest session musicians, resulting in a sound that is surgically tight yet undeniably soulful. It carries the swagger of a television detective and the glitter of a mid-decade discotheque, blending orchestral grandeur with gritty, street-level funk. The arrangements are dense and expertly layered, featuring soaring strings that sit comfortably alongside aggressive wah-wah guitars.

What truly sets them apart is their cinematic DNA. Because they were often tasked with creating themes for television, their music has an inherent sense of momentum and drama. It’s not just about the four-on-the-floor beat; it’s about the tension and release of the brass sections and the intricate, bubbling basslines that keep the energy high. There is a specific 'L.A. Studio' sheen here that makes the music feel expensive and expansive, capturing a moment when disco was merging with sophisticated pop production.

Start with 'Theme from S.W.A.T.' to hear the definitive example of their high-energy, instrumental prowess. From there, dive into the album 'Disco-Fied' to experience how they translate that same urgency into longer-form dance tracks. It is the perfect starting point for anyone who loves the intersection of funk, disco, and 70s television aesthetics.

Rhythm Heritage was a 1970s American funk/R&B band, best known for their 1976 US number one single "Theme from S.W.A.T.". It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in February 1976. They also recorded theme music for several other ABC television shows, including "Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow," also from 1976, from Baretta (sung by Sammy Davis Jr.). Rhythm Heritage was formed in 1975 by producer Steve Barri and session keyboardist Michael Omartian, and included bassist Scott Edwards and drummer Ed Greene. Other musicians who played on some of their recordings included Ray Parker Jr., Jeff Porcaro, Victor Feldman, Jay Graydon, Dean Parks, Ben Benay, and Bob Walden.
