Rhymefest

Soulful, sample-heavy Chicago hip-hop that trades glitz for grit. Witty storytelling and blue-collar anthems for the everyday hustle.

Intro

Rhymefest sounds like the smartest guy at the neighborhood bar, someone who can dismantle a political system and crack a joke in the same breath. His music is built on a foundation of warm, dusty soul samples and crisp boom-bap percussion, often courtesy of collaborators like Mark Ronson and Kanye West. It carries the unmistakable weight of Chicago's South Side, blending the city's rich musical history with a sharp, modern edge.

What sets him apart is his refusal to lean into the typical tropes of mid-2000s rap stardom. Instead of celebrating excess, he celebrates the janitor, the substitute teacher, and the father trying to make ends meet. His flow is conversational yet technically precise, a remnant of his days as a world-class battle rapper, allowing him to deliver heavy social commentary without ever sounding preachy.

Start with Blue Collar. It is a definitive document of the mid-2000s Chicago sound, featuring high-energy tracks like Brand New alongside deeply personal narratives. It captures a moment when hip-hop felt both grounded in reality and capable of massive, orchestral ambition.

Che Armond Smith (born July 6, 1977), known professionally as Rhymefest, is an American rapper and songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. He is best known for his work with fellow Chicago rapper Kanye West, having co-written West's "Jesus Walks" (which won Best Rap Song) in 2004 and "New Slaves" in 2013. He also co-wrote "Glory", for Common and John Legend in 2014, which received a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and an Academy Award for Best Original Song. As a recording artist, he signed with Mark Ronson's Allido Records, an imprint of J Records to release his debut album, Blue Collar.
