Intro

Reubens Accomplice sounds like the precise moment a desert heatwave breaks into a cool evening. Their music is built on a foundation of classic indie rock and second-wave emo, but it is polished with a shimmering, sun-bleached quality that feels uniquely Southwestern. It is melodic and approachable, yet carries a heavy weight of nostalgia and quiet reflection in its bones.

What sets them apart is their 'family' approach to recording, often pulling in textures like pedal steel, piano, and lush vocal harmonies from a wide circle of collaborators. This gives their songs a communal, lived-in feel, as if the music itself is a conversation between old friends. The production is clean and warm, avoiding the jagged edges of their punk roots in favor of something more expansive and atmospheric.

Start with 'The Bull, the Balloon, and the Family' to hear them at their peak of creative collaboration. It is an essential document of the Arizona indie scene, blending earnest storytelling with sophisticated arrangements that reward repeated, careful listening.

Reubens Accomplice is an American band from Phoenix, Arizona. The group formed in 1994 at Thunderbird High School in Phoenix and released several 7" singles over the course of the 1990s, touring with DIY punk and emo acts such as Jimmy Eat World, Pedro the Lion, The Promise Ring, and Karate. The group's debut full-length, I Blame the Scenery was issued on Better Looking Records in 2001. Among the guests on the album are members of Calexico, Giant Sand, and Jimmy Eat World, as well as Neko Case. Their follow-up full-length, The Bull, the Balloon, and the Family, arrived in 2004. In 2009, the group toured with Jimmy Eat World on the Clarity 10-year anniversary tour, having been the group's opening band on the original 1999 Clarity tour. Their newest album, Sons of Men, was released in 2012.
