Remembrance

Remembrance is a cornerstone project of the French funeral doom scene, formed in 2004 by the prolific duo of Matthieu Sachs and Carline van Roos. Emerging from Lille, the band occupies a specific niche between the crushing weight of traditional funeral doom (evoking Shape of Despair) and the more melodic, atmospheric sensibilities of gothic doom.

Their sound is characterized by extremely slow BPMs, heavy use of minor-key synth pads, and a dual vocal approach that often pits guttural growls against distant, ethereal female textures. Throughout their discography, from the raw desperation of 'Frail Visions' to the more polished 'Fall, Obsidian Night', they have maintained a reputation for high-quality, emotionally resonant compositions that avoid the genre's tendency toward monotony. They are closely linked to the band Lethian Dreams, sharing members and a similar penchant for melancholic atmospheres, though Remembrance remains their most 'metal' and sonically heavy outlet. Critically, they are respected for their ability to weave intricate melodies into a genre typically defined by its monolithic simplicity.
