Rasmus Gardell, operating under the moniker Rasmus (or Rasmushroom), is a pivotal though often overlooked figure in the late-1990s big beat and breakbeat scene. Emerging from Sweden but finding his creative home in London, Gardell's sound is deeply indebted to the 'Skint Records' aesthetic, characterized by heavy sampling, distorted funk loops, and a high-tempo, party-oriented energy.

His debut album, Mass Hysteria (1998), remains a cult classic of the genre, sitting comfortably alongside the works of Bentley Rhythm Ace and Fatboy Slim. While the big beat movement eventually faded, Gardell's work is distinguished by a more nuanced, sometimes surreal approach to sampling that hinted at trip-hop influences. His later work, including the 2000 album Serious Pranks, continued to explore the intersection of electronic textures and organic grooves. Despite a long hiatus from major label releases, his influence persists among crate-diggers and fans of the '90s breakbeat revival, noted for his ability to blend aggressive rhythmic structures with a lighthearted, playful melodic sensibility.
