Rahzel

Mind-bending vocal percussion that mimics entire drum kits and turntables simultaneously. Pure, raw hip-hop energy created entirely by the human voice.

Intro

Rahzel's music is a masterclass in the physical limits of the human body. It sounds like a fully produced boom-bap record, but as you listen closer, you realize the kick drum, the snare, the high-hat, and the scratching are all coming from one person's mouth. It is visceral, rhythmic, and deeply rooted in the golden era of New York hip-hop, yet it feels futuristic because of the sheer technical impossibility of the performance.

What makes him truly distinctive is his 'vocal percussionist' approach, specifically the ability to sing a melodic chorus while maintaining a complex breakbeat underneath. Unlike traditional beatboxers who alternate between sounds, Rahzel creates a polyphonic experience that feels like multiple tracks playing at once. His work with The Roots and Mike Patton shows a restless curiosity that pushes the voice into the realm of avant-garde instrumentation.

Start with 'If Your Mother Only Knew' to witness the legendary simultaneous vocal and beat technique. Then move to the album 'Make The Music 2000' for a full picture of how he integrates these skills into traditional song structures. It is essential listening for anyone who thinks they know what the human voice is capable of.

Rozell Manely Brown (born October 6, 1964) is an American beatboxer and rapper, formerly a member of the Roots. Rahzel is known for an ability to sing or rap while simultaneously beatboxing, as evidenced in his performances of "Iron Man" and his signature song "If Your Mother Only Knew", a hidden track on Make the Music 2000. His talents are showcased in various solo projects as well as on Ben Harper's 2000 single "Steal My Kisses." He also provided his own voice on video games SSX and SSX Tricky, as well as the EA Sports BIG logo from 2000 to 2008. Rahzel was featured on the album True Love by Toots and the Maytals, which won the Grammy Award in 2004 for Best Reggae Album, and showcased many notable musicians.
