Ragnarok

Ragnarok (UK) is a seminal but often overlooked entity in the British pagan and folk metal scene, formed in Newcastle in 1988. Led primarily by the multi-instrumentalist Deörth, the band predates the massive commercial explosion of folk metal, instead aligning with the raw, atmospheric experimentation of the early 1990s underground.

Their sound identity is characterized by a fusion of black metal vocal aesthetics with melodic structures derived from Celtic and Germanic folk traditions. Unlike the polished 'battle metal' of the 2000s, Ragnarok utilized lo-fi production and analog synthesizers to create a haunting, forest-bound atmosphere. Their career arc is defined by cult releases like 'Beloved of the Raven God' and 'Domgeorn', which are highly regarded by collectors of the 'Pagan Renaissance' era. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the extreme metal of the 80s and the more melodic, heritage-focused metal of the 90s.
