Qui is a Los Angeles-based noise rock outfit formed in 2000 by Matt Cronk and Paul Christensen. Initially a duo, they carved out a niche within the experimental rock scene through a combination of technical proficiency and a raw, abrasive aesthetic.
Their sound is characterized by jagged guitar work and complex, often asymmetrical drumming. The band gained significant underground attention in 2006 when David Yow, the legendary frontman of The Jesus Lizard and Scratch Acid, joined as a full-time member. This era, marked by the release of 'Love's Miracle' on Ipecac Recordings, solidified their reputation for confrontational, high-energy performances and surrealist lyrical themes. Following Yow's departure around 2013, the band returned to their roots as a duo while continuing to collaborate with avant-garde figures like Trevor Dunn. They are critically regarded as torchbearers for the 'AmRep' style of noise rock, blending the aggression of punk with the structural curiosity of math rock and the theatricality of performance art.
