Pygmy Lush

Hushed, ramshackle folk with a punk soul. It sounds like a secret shared in a basement, blending dusty acoustic melodies with a raw, unpolished emotional weight.

Intro

Pygmy Lush sounds like the morning after a chaotic basement show, where the adrenaline has faded into a quiet, gravelly introspection. Their music is built on a foundation of 'twisted folk' that feels intentionally unrefined, using acoustic guitars that buzz and creak alongside vocals that range from a weary whisper to a distant, ghostly howl. It is music that feels lived-in, smelling of old wood and stale beer.

What makes them truly distinctive is their lineage. Formed by members of legendary screamo and hardcore bands like Pg.99 and City of Caterpillar, they carry a punk intensity into a folk setting. They don't play folk like traditionalists; they play it with the tension and emotional stakes of a hardcore band that has finally decided to lower its voice. The production, often handled by Kurt Ballou, captures the physical space of the room, making every string squeak and floorboard creak part of the composition.

Start with 'Mount Hope' if you want to experience their full metamorphosis into a haunting, quiet ensemble. If you prefer the jarring contrast of their earlier work, 'Bitter River' offers a fascinating bridge between trashy punk outbursts and somber acoustic meditations. Their 2025 release 'TOTEM' serves as a powerful time capsule of their mid-career evolution.

Pygmy Lush (sometimes spelled as one word) is a band from Sterling, Virginia formed by ex-Pg. 99 members Mike and Chris Taylor and Johnny Ward. Other members include Mike Widman and Eric Kane, and previous associated acts include Malady, Mannequin, and Hissing Choir, amongst many others. In 2007, they released an album of previously and newly recorded material on Robotic Empire entitled Bitter River. The songs alternate between two general styles, noise punk and acoustic folk, described by one reviewer as "ramshackle trashy punk rave-ups between beer-soaked bouts of twisted folk”. In June 2008, they released their second album, Mount Hope, which was recorded by Kurt Ballou (Converge, who has contributed to most of their releases) of Godcity Studio and released on Lovitt Records. This album consisted entirely of quieter, folk style songs. Various reviewers described the album as a "metamorphosis" and that the band "has grown up and into a new sound... leav[ing] hardcore behind" to describe the stylistic evolution of the band. Their 2009 split LP with Turboslut is available on LP from Exotic Fever Records of Washington, DC. In 2011, they released a new full length, Old Friends and a two song 7" entitled Cold World / Guilt. In 2025, they released the new studio album Totem.
