Pure

Pure represents a pivotal intersection in the UK industrial and power electronics scene of the late 1980s. Formed by Matthew Bower (who would later gain acclaim with Total and Skullflower), Alex Binnie, and Alex Winsor, the group was a contemporary of Whitehouse but diverged by utilizing guitars as their primary noise generators.

This choice imbued their sound with a specific harmonic complexity and physical weight often missing from pure synth-based noise. Their history is famously convoluted, with early releases like 'Fetor' on Birthbiter actually consisting of Bower's solo material under the Pure name, while the 2007 Freak Animal reissue finally restored the original trio's recordings. Culturally, they occupy a space between the transgressive 'shock' tactics of early power electronics and the more abstract, texture-focused 'wall of noise' that would come to define the 90s noise scene. Their influence is felt deeply in the works of Ramleh and the broader Broken Flag label circle, as well as in the more experimental fringes of raw black metal that prioritize atmosphere and sonic filth over traditional riffing.
