Puff Dragon is the downtempo alter-ego of Steve Good, a Welsh-born producer who became a fixture of the Japanese electronic scene after moving there in 1995. Before Puff Dragon, Good was primarily known for his work as Double Dragon, a project focused on high-energy psychedelic progressive trance.
In 2003, he pivoted toward a slower, more atmospheric sound, culminating in the 2005 release of Sazanami on Dakini Records. This transition marked a shift from the dancefloor to the 'chill-out' room, emphasizing comfort and organic textures over peak-time intensity. His sound is characterized by a fusion of tribal percussion, ethnic samples, and heavy dub-influenced bass, all wrapped in a warm, analog-style production. Critically, he is viewed as a bridge between the psychill and downtempo lounge scenes, maintaining the intricate sound design of the former with the accessibility of the latter. His move to Japan is often cited as a major influence on the 'zen' qualities of his music, which frequently incorporates natural field recordings and a patient, meditative pacing.
