Praying Mantis

Praying Mantis is a cornerstone of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), though they occupied a unique niche as the movement's most melodic and AOR-leaning outfit. Formed in 1974 by brothers Tino and Chris Troy, the band predated many of their more famous contemporaries, eventually contributing the seminal track 'Captured City' to the 'Metal for Muthas' compilation.

Their sound identity is built on a foundation of dual-lead guitar harmonies and exceptionally dense vocal layering, influenced heavily by Thin Lizzy and Wishbone Ash. Despite a critically acclaimed debut in 1981, legal disputes stalled their momentum in the UK, leading to a fascinating second life in Japan where they maintain a cult-like following. Their career arc is characterized by resilience and a revolving door of high-caliber vocalists, including former members of Iron Maiden and Rainbow. Critically, they are respected for their technical consistency and for bridging the gap between traditional heavy metal and melodic rock, influencing the more 'melodic' end of the power metal spectrum.
