Possessed by Paul James

High-velocity folk that feels like a spiritual possession. Raw vocals, frantic banjo, and a stomp-box heartbeat for moments of total emotional release.

Intro

Listening to Konrad Wert is less like hearing a folk record and more like witnessing a private exorcism. The music is built on the skeletal frame of traditional Americana - banjo, fiddle, and a rhythmic stomp - but it is propelled by a manic, punk-rock urgency that threatens to break the instruments. It is loud, dusty, and deeply human, capturing the friction between a pacifist Mennonite upbringing and the chaotic noise of modern life.

What truly sets this apart is the sheer physical intensity of the performance. You can hear the wood of the fiddle creaking and the strain in Wert's vocal cords as he shifts from a gentle croon to a ragged, desperate howl. It is a one-man-band setup that sounds like a full ensemble possessed by a single, restless spirit. There is no studio polish here to hide the cracks; the imperfections are the point.

Start with 'Feed the Family' to hear the definitive blend of his foot-stomping rhythms and heart-on-sleeve songwriting. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who likes their country music with a side of existential crisis and a heavy dose of grit. It is music for the moments when you need to feel everything at once, as loudly as possible.

Konrad Wert, known as Possessed by Paul James since 2005, is an American folk singer, songwriter and musician from Lee County, Florida. His music is composed of string instruments including banjo, guitar and fiddle with roots within folk, blues and punk. He was raised in a small Mennonite community among pacifists, service workers and transplants. He lives in Texas with his wife and sons selling his music online and going on tours. He is also a special education teacher in Kerrville, Texas. At the end of 2013 There Will Be Nights When I'm Lonely was released with Hillgrass Bluebilly Records. The album initially charted at #12 on Billboard Magazine under the Country/Bluegrass genre. National Public Radio, CMT, MTV featured both articles and tracks from the release. The New York Times stated "PPJ [was] a one man folk wonder" and was featured at one of the top concerts of the 2014 Pickathon Music Festival in Oregon.
