Possessed

The raw, chaotic birth of death metal. Blistering Bay Area thrash speed meets early guttural vocals and occult obsession. Essential for fans of extreme metal history.

Intro

Possessed sounds like a genre being born in real-time, specifically the moment thrash metal curdled into something far more sinister and ugly. It is the sound of teenage aggression meeting a genuine interest in the macabre, characterized by Jeff Becerra's pioneering 'grunt' vocals and guitars that sound like they are physically vibrating off the tracks. The music is fast, frantic, and intentionally unpolished, carrying a primitive energy that modern high-fidelity metal often lacks.

What makes them truly distinctive is the bridge they built between the structured speed of Metallica or Exodus and the lawless extremity of the Florida death metal scene that followed. Their riffs are jagged and their solos are often chaotic, dive-bombing messes of notes that prioritize feeling and intensity over technical perfection. There is a palpable sense of danger in their 80s recordings, a feeling that the band is barely in control of the sonic violence they are unleashing.

Start with 'Seven Churches' from 1985. It is the definitive blueprint for the entire death metal genre, containing the track 'Death Metal' which many believe gave the movement its name. From the tubular bells of 'The Exorcist' to the relentless battery of 'Burning in Hell', it remains one of the most influential documents in the history of extreme music.

Possessed is an American death metal band, originally formed in 1982 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Noted for their fast style of playing and Jeff Becerra's growled vocals, they are often called the first band in the death metal genre, and paved the way for the 1980s Bay Area thrash metal scene, along with Metallica, Exodus, Testament and Death Angel. The band is also notable for featuring then-teenage guitarist Larry LaLonde, who went on to join Primus. After breaking up in 1987, and reforming from 1990 to 1993, the band reformed again under original bassist and vocalist Jeff Becerra in 2007. Possessed has released three studio albums, Seven Churches (1985), Beyond the Gates (1986) and Revelations of Oblivion (2019), as well as one live album, two compilation albums and two EPs.
