Porcupine Tree is the primary vehicle for Steven Wilson's evolution from a bedroom psychedelic project into one of the most influential progressive acts of the 21st century. Formed in 1987, the band's early era was characterized by space rock and neo-psychedelia heavily influenced by Pink Floyd and Krautrock.
By the late 1990s, the addition of Richard Barbieri (ex-Japan) on keyboards and later Gavin Harrison on drums transformed them into a powerhouse of technical precision. Their 'middle period' (Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun) integrated Britpop and alternative sensibilities, while their 2000s output (In Absentia, Deadwing) famously incorporated elements of extreme metal and industrial music. This shift was partly inspired by Wilson's friendship with Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth. Critically, they are lauded for 'democratizing' prog, stripping away the genre's often-criticized whimsy in favor of a cold, modern, and emotionally resonant aesthetic.
