Sun-drenched ukulele duets and breezy vocal harmonies that reimagine pop hits as vintage Hawaiian lounge standards. Pure, unadulterated tropical escapism.
Petty Booka sounds like a technicolor postcard from a 1950s Honolulu resort, filtered through a playful Japanese indie sensibility. The core of their sound is the interplay between two ukuleles and two voices, locked in sweet, high-register harmonies that feel both innocent and meticulously arranged. It is music that refuses to be heavy, opting instead for a shimmering, acoustic lightness that evokes salt air and floral leis.
What makes them truly distinctive is their 'off-kilter' approach to repertoire. They treat Hawaiian classics with reverence but apply that same breezy, tropical filter to everything from punk rock anthems to holiday standards. This juxtaposition creates a delightful cognitive dissonance: you might hear a song you once mosh-pitted to transformed into a gentle, swaying hula. Their aesthetic is a unique intersection of 'kawaii' culture and mid-century Americana.
Start with 'Hawaiian Pure Heart' to hear them at their most traditional and evocative. If you want to experience their quirky side, 'Dancing With Petty Booka' showcases their ability to bend various genres into their signature ukulele-pop shape. It is the perfect soundtrack for anyone who wants to turn their living room into a permanent summer vacation.
Petty Booka is a Japanese musical group that consists of two women, Petty and Booka, who sing and play ukulele. Most of the band's early output consisted of cover versions of Hawaiian ukulele classics. The two also do many covers of well-known rock songs. Petty Booka was part of Sister Benten Online, a record company run by Audrey "Benten" Kimura. The band is based in Japan, and has toured of Europe and North America. The group was formed in 1995. In 1997, the original Petty left the duo, and a new Petty filled her spot. In November 2002, the original Booka also left to take care of her baby and was replaced by Candy Eyeslugger's Maiko. The current "Petty" and "Booka" hail from Chiba and Saitama, Japan. The band has performed several times at the United States music festival SXSW as part of the Japan Nite event. As of 2008, they are actively touring and recording. Petty Booka has previously toured with Bad Credit and The Aquabats. Their next release will reportedly be a bluegrass album.
